Was doing some maintenance on the college kid’s beater (1999 Ford Contour Appliance). The headlights were as yellow and pitted as would be expected for a 15 year old plastic car. So I decided to try the headlight restoration path. Picked up the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! kit at O’reilly’s.

I thought I got a good before pic, but maybe not - this doesn’t’ really show how yellow the lenses appeared, but the pitting is atrocious:

Ok, so taped it up and did the polish treatment (foam ball and polish):

pretty good, but ther was a lot of pitting left, so i figured it was worth a try with the deep-cleaning pore-cleansing method. Mothers uses and 800 and 1600 wet sanding and a 3200 grit dry sanding. Wet sanding, rinsing away grime as it builds (I think thats the 800-grit):

1600-grit with detritus:

after 3200-grit buffing, but before wipedown and 2nd polish:

After:

Much better - no yellowing. Still some pitting and glazing, but light shines through once again! The passenger side turned out a bit better. It may not have had as much damage, or the polishing tech was a bit more fastidious on that side. A reasonable $25 and 45 minutes spent.

I have done this twice on my bug-eyed w210. I used the 3M kit. First time did not last long. I learned my lesson. Second time I rattle-can clear coated after polishing and sanding. Look brand new after two years. Ohh, and I wet sanded by hand with finer and finer grit paper the second time also....
